POSITION SUMMARY

Purpose

To lead R&D activities in the area of heat treating atmospheres and to interact with Asia GAD team to provide assistance in support of commercial activities.  This role will be integrated into the atmospheres COE in support of new technology development, technology transfer and customer trials.

Nature and Scope

Atmospheres COE has an open position for a Materials Engineer or Scientist to lead R&D activities in Asia for metals processing/heat treating atmospheres.  This position is primarily responsible for laboratory evaluation, setup and development of new atmosphere/technology solutions, as well as implementation of successful solutions at customer sites, working with the Asia GAD team.  The position will be based out of Shanghai; required travel in support of customer trials is estimated at 20%.

A successful candidate will be knowledgeable of thermo-mechanical/thermo-chemical processing of metals, surface/bulk metallurgy and have a high degree of hands-on practical equipment experience and interest, with strong underlying engineering and execution skills.

The incumbent must be an experienced and innovative researcher with strong communication skills (written & verbal), and have familiarity with application development process and customer interactions.  

Position requires an advanced degree in Materials Engineering or Science with 3 - 5 years work experience in an R&D environment.  In addition, any prior experience in the heat treating/metals processing industry is highly desired.  Strong knowledge of metallography and heat treating processes is required, while experiences related to process modelling, furnace and analytical equipment and industrial gas handling systems is desirable.  


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1.        Lead new applications development projects, plan & manage execution. Use scientific principles to describe and understand the results of applications testing and apply the results in project planning and execution.
2.        Understand Air Products Metals Processing technologies as practiced globally; know how/when to leverage effectively.
3.        Identify local and regional industry trends and potential benefits for Air Products; assist the GAD Asia team in technology transfer and engagement of customers.
4.        Build, sustain and leverage technical relationships with key academic institutions and customers in their field of expertise.
5.        Able to effectively work with multifunctional teams, country, regionally and globally based.  
6.        Use AP work process to capture ideas, develop projects proposals, have projects approved and prioritized and document accordingly.
7.        Employs all AP EHS standards in daily work.


JOB REQUIREMENTS


1.         Advanced degree in Materials Science/Engineering with Metals Processing/Heat Treating experience

2.        Innovative researcher with some industry/customer interaction experience
