the meanings of 'retained, residual, remaining'

残余应力: resudual tress, or remaining stress
what is the difference of these three words?

During the metal processing process ,because of  uneven stress field, strain field, temperature field and Inhomogeneity of microstructure,the stress preserved  in the deformed body after deformation  is called residual stress .
Rresidual austenite in the current ambient temperature after austenite occurred phase transition during cooling process is called retained austenite.
And then , would you understand  the difference of they?

Normally you can just understand from the literal meaning.
Residual means what we don't expect to get, while retained means what we  need. But the two don't intend what we control on purpose.
You can just use the english version, chinese maybe not express so accurately.
